When I was a little - long before I could read or write - I would drag my mother to the stack of books by my bedside and beg her "just one more story". We would pour over the intricate illustrations and recreate our favourite characters, imagining new stories and adventures they might embark on. 

The māori word 'whakarākei' meaning to 'adorn, embellish, enhance' resonates deeply as sometimes I've found that illustration picks up where the real world drops off, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Illustration remains at the core of my work and spills across other mediums in attempt to communicate whimsy and playfulness along with creativity, authenticity and personal connection to our surrounding environment.
