Welcome to the beginning of your relationship with this ancient medium.
Well done on taking the first step toward making time for yourself to play and explore. If you enjoy working with your hands, getting lost in the moment, self expression without limits and don't mind getting a little dirty, then this course is for you.

Topics covered include:

  • An introduction to the clay, how it is formed, gathered and processed.
  • Hand building techniques including pinching, coiling, tiles and slab building.
  • Methods of joining and creating larger forms.
  • Decorating techniques: Understanding the difference between slips, underglazes and sgraffito.
  • An introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel. (An opportunity to have a go on the wheel will be provided for those showing proficiency in handbuilding.)
  • An introduction to glazing.
  • Firing your work

After sharing a few techniques, your freedom of exploration will be encouraged. The focus will be on your growth with the medium and developing your ability to create expressive and cohesive three-dimensional forms in clay.

About the tutor:

Tui Johnson is a freelance Kai Tahu illustrator, designer and potter from Ōraka (Colac Bay) Southland. Born into an artistic family, her father Peter Johnson trained for his pottery career of over 54 years under June Ashley in Otatara. Her mother Marion Flavell (nee Bull) illustrated for the the Southland Times and continues to work as a painter and sculptor.

Tui trained as a Graphic Designer at the Design and Arts College of NZ in Christchurch, and after 15 years of squinting at a computer screen, she rediscovered clay late 2019. She enjoys creating tableware that brings whanau together and sneaks art into everyday life .
